Chicago Fed points in September National Activity Index to official recession. U.S. Economic activity weakened further in September, with a key indicator signaling that a recession is underway by the Federal Reserve Bank Chicago. National Chicago Fed Activity Index fell to negative 2.57 months past, from negative 1.61 during August. Most of the decline was driven by a sharp drop in industrial production. The four broad categories of indicators made negative contributions to the index. The three-month moving average negative fell to 1.78 during September, negative 1.18 during August. The sub-zero figure suggests that growth in domestic economic activity is below its trend history. It also markets the 10th consecutive month that the three-month moving average "has indicated an increasing likelihood that a recession has begun" Chicago Fed said in a news release Tuesday morning. The data also indicates low inflationary pressures. Several Federal Reserve members have recently predicted that a slowing economy will have a moderating impact on inflation. The total industrial production fell 2.8 percent in September, a decrease 1.0 percent in August, according to the Chicago Federal Reserve. "Temporary disruptions in production due to recent hurricanes accounted for most of the decline in total industrial production in September. "
