Tied with hipster kitsch kindly and affectionately goofy female power, Dramedy director Drew Barrymore Roller Derby, "Whip It", is a gas. In his first Contact-sports film, Barrymore hams as a skater is injury-prone "smashley Simpson" but pays equal attention to all players in an animated femme focus group led by Ellen Page - who, like Bliss Cavender wallflower Flower (also known as "Babe Ruthless") finally has a role to match with his star-making turn in "Juno." Much less than it did early in "Juno" and "Hard Candy", the young thesp takes a slight turn toward realism and welcome here, while folding the tone is warm capriciously defining quality of the film.

As if the emotional weight of a food fight Hurl Scouts were not surprising enough, the end credits " use of cliches comedy bloopers feels downright touching as "Whip It" reluctantly takes leave of his butt-kicking heroines lovably - at least until second part.
