Skateboarding Scholarships

Getting an education is extremely important and opens up plenty of opportunities for people. There are scholarships to help pay for them including some from the world of skateboarding. Many people are surprised to learn about this, but it is a sport just like many others out there. It is finally getting the recognition it needs in many ways.

The very first skateboarding scholarship was the Patrick Kerr memorial scholarship. This young man had a deep passion for skating and did plenty in his community to help get a skating park in place there. He also did work for non profit organizations relating to skateboarding. That is why individuals applying for this scholarship must show that they are active in such ways relating to skateboarding as well as in their community. There are some other guidelines to evaluate as well.

Mike Vallely is the latest professional skater to get on board with this idea. He is in the process of putting together and sponsoring such scholarships. The final details of this are still being worked out but you can be sure there will be quite a bit of money involved from him and his organization for those that want to go to college and have been active in the world of skateboarding.

Many professional skateboarders are donating their own funds or funds through their sponsors to help set up more of these types of scholarships. They feel it is an excellent way to help individuals with a passion for skating to also have a wonderful education. As a result the award amounts seem to be getting larger and there are more such scholarships out there that a person can apply for.

IASC has a committee in place that is focused on getting more of our youth involved in skateboarding. Part of their plans involve having instructors at various skate parks to assure parents and to help individuals learn the basics. They also have their own scholarship funds in place. Most of the time they will also donate money to other great skating scholarship funds too so that they have plenty of money to work with.

The internet is a great place for you to learn about such skateboarding scholarships. Imagine the event you love so much and spend your time with being something that you can use to pay for your education! Your parents will be very pleased, and they might give you more skating time as well!

Take the time to read all of the guidelines for the various skating scholarships that are offered. Each one has different requirements as well as deadlines. You want to have all of your information completed and turned in on time so you will have the very best chance of winning these scholarships.

In the past skateboarding scholarships were few and far between. They even fell into the category of whacky or outrageous scholarships. Today though the laughter that was once associated with them has passed. Instead this sport is starting to be seen as one that offers people a chance to get fit and to show off their skills. It is also much harder to skateboard than the average person might believe. These scholarship funds are here to stay and they are going to make a tremendous difference in the lives of many skaters out there.

On a side note, Element Skateboards has some scholarships too but not for college. Instead they have a program called Elemental Awareness and it offers some funding to pay for camps for those interested in skateboarding. Make sure you check out what they have to offer as well.
