Anybody know how to identify a stone Garnet?
I have a necklace of red stones, but have no idea what they are. After checking online and visually compare them, I think it could be garnets. Anyway to make sure that on my own? Do garnets valuable?
I disagree with previous responders: the color is a poor way to determine what a maroon. They can be red, brown, black, white, yellow, green or colorless, and may have many shades between these. A better way to identify the garnets is of the shape and hardness. Garnets usually how dodecahedra, ie like crystals of 12 pentagonal faces, and have a hardness between 6.5 to 7.5 (may or may not scratch the quartz).
