thanks so much.
Hi,
The problem with skateboards is that they are most varied in choices of components to suit a myriad of individual preferences; as an example, two people can be skating together in the same place but one might prefer a narrow board with bigger wheels whilst the other might like a slightly wider board with smaller wheels.
I agree with those who mentioned that you should go to a skateshop. The parts of the skateboard i.e. deck, wheels and trucks vary in brands and attributes such as its measurements, weight, quality and hardness (for the wheels), which, in combination will ultimately affect the skateboard's performance. You will most likely be asked quite a number of questions so to save time and confusion, it would be beneficial if you were to know about:
1. his preferred style of riding i.e. vert, transition, ditches, street, park, cruising on the streets or a combination of them
2. the sorts of tricks he likes to do, i.e. grinds, flatland or vert tricks.
3. Deck widths are important. Perhaps it'll be good to secretly measure out the width of his skateboard to know roughly which width of deck to get.
4. Perhaps it might help as well to know the current brand of his trucks and wheels.
Personally, I would recommend a Zero deck skateboard because I like it
. It's got black Goth-like graphics (if your boyfriend likes goth stuff), and is a known good performance board, although i think it'll cost quite a bit.
A word of caution: Getting a customised skateboard from a shop can be expensive, and, as the skateboard is an intimate thing, it will be a shame to hunt, antagonise over and pay a high price for a skateboard, have him not like it and hardly use it. Perhaps it'll just be easier to buy him vouchers to use in a skate shop, if the skate shop does do that sort of thing. Or maybe, if the shop opens on christmas day, you can just take him to it, unleash him in there and let him choose what he likes.
I'm just giving a note of caution and relevant suggestions in the paragraph above - I'm not meaning to discourage you. However, good luck on your skateboard search!
