The screen on my mac keeps going blank with lines down it?

Randomly I'll be on my computer and my screen will just go blank with colored lines going down it. After about 30 seconds it goes back to normal. Almost like a TV screen will do. It's a macbook air. Anyone know what I can do to fix it? Right now it temporarily does this, but I'm paranoid that one day it will permanently go like this and MY LIFE is on this computer. Any advice would be great!

step number 1 is to back up everything important on the computer immediately to an external drive. my 2008 macbook is starting to do the same thing. half the screen will go black and after awhile it seems to fix itself. sometimes all i need to do is tap the screen a few times and it fixes itself. i had an imac at work that was doing something similar and the guy who fixed it said it was the logic board that needed to be replaced. take it to an apple store so they can diagnose the problem. apple has great service and doesn't charge if it's within the first year of service or you have applecare. if it's out of warranty ask for a diagnosis and see if it's worth it to repair or purchase a new one.
i'm in the same boat right now so i feel your pain. just make sure you back up all your important stuff. external drives can be purchased for around $50. small price to pay to save all your photos, videos, personal files, etc.
