BODY ARMOR HISTORY AND USES

Body armor is used to provide protection from weapons, which would cause bodily injury and/or death. Modern day armor is used to protect individuals from the penetration of bullets from guns and rifles. They prevent bullets from passing through the armor and causing injury to internal organs by catching the bullets and absorbing the energy upon impact.

The first kind of body armor to defend against attacks of the enemy were made of animal hides, bronze and eventually steel. Various types and styles of armor were used, but it wasn’t until the 14th century that steel armor was used to protect from head to toe. In the 18th century the first body armor was created to defend against bullets from gunshots. In 1950 armor was made with cotton, fiberglass, nylon and aluminum.

Concealable body armor is constructed of layered materials called the ballistic panel. The panel is then inserted into a nylon or cotton carrier. They come is various styles, sizes and layers. The more layers the more overall ballistic strength and performance. This is often referred to as levels of protection. The higher the level, the better protection the vest will offer. Todays high tech vests are flame resistant and very lightweight compared to older models.

Law enforcement professionals such as police, the military, certain security guards, and armored car personnel use body armor. Civilians are now also wearing body armor in professions that in days past did not require this type of protection. Attorneys, judges, taxicab drivers, and others who believe they need bodily protection are now wearing them.
